Vellanad Sree Bhagavathi Temple

.Installation day is observed(Pradhishtadhinam) in "Uthrittathi" star of malayalam month "Makaram".This is the occasion on which the entire city becomes focussed on the temple.The sreets are made colourful on festival days with colourful processions.Tender coconut frond and plantain leaf-stalks are also used for street decoration.Ponkala is an exclusive festival for women.On the day of ponkala,lakhs of women devotees assemble from different places in Trivandrum,a sweet offering of rice,jaggery and coconut in earthern pots.After Ponkala, the chief priest of the temple goes around and blesses the devotees by sprinkling holy water and flower petals on them. Vellanad amma is the rebrith of the incarnation of Adhiparashakthi.The incarnation of devi is to kill Dharikasuran, who ruled the three world under his control. Sree Bhadrakali is the first diety of Vellanad sree Bhagavathy temple This temple is of 800 years old. The main installation of Vellanadu devi is brought from a seashore village near to Thiruvanathapuram and was installed according to the ritual poojas.
