A Brief History

The Department of Chemistry had its beginning in the year 1971 in our college. In the initial days chemistry was taught only for Pre University Classes.
Mr. M. Morrison Paul (Former Head of the Department) and Mr.G. Arumugakani were the only two staff working in the Department. In 1980 when PUC was abolished by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Mr. G. Arumugakani became surplus in the Department and was redeployed to Aditanar College of Arts and Science, Tiruchendur and latter he was permanently absorbed there. Under the VII Five year Plan Mr. M. Morison Paul was deputed to do M.Phil., under FIP. This upgraded the quality of teaching of our Department. There has been a pending request on our college to start B.Sc., Chemistry at UG level in our college. Inspired by the demand, our management started up B.Sc. Chemistry course in our College in the year 1986. Starting up of B.Sc. Chemistry in our College added another cap in the feather of our College. In the vacancies caused by the introduction of the new course Mr. N. Muruganantham, Mr. R. Murugesan and Mrs. D. Santhi were appointed as lecturers. Thus the number of staff in the Department rises to four. In 1996, Mrs. C. Latha M. Sc., M. Phil., Lecturer was appointed in the Department and staff strength rise to five. In the year 2000 during the IX Plan period Mr. R. Murugesan and Mrs. D. Santhi were deputed to do Ph.D., under FIP of the UGC and they have been awarded Ph.D. On 30-3-2004 Mr. M. Morrison Paul retired from the service. On the very next day Mr. N. Muruganantham assumed charge as the Head of the Department of Chemistry. Though the Government of Tamil Nadu did not grant permission to fill the retirement vacancy, our management appointed one teacher Mr. T. Suresh (an alumnus) to fill the retirement vacancy. Now totally there are 4 regular and one temporary management staff working in the Department.

Apart from the teaching staff there are 3 non-teaching staff working in the Department. Mr. S. Indiran, the then storekeeper retired from service on 30-11-2005 and in his place Mr. A. Thangamani joined duty on 1-2-2006. The Department has two laboratories with voluminous equipments. The Management had been able to provide financial assistance to up grade it in to a standard one. During 2005-2006 alone our management spends Rs. 1.45 lakhs in our Department towards up gradation of our laboratory. The laboratory have research oriented equipments like spectrophotometer, digital electronic balance, etc., for doing project work.

Details of participation in career up gradation programmes and publications of the teachers

Our staff members have been upgrading their knowledge by attending Refresher courses and Orientation courses. Seminars, conferences, and workshops have been the good occasion to our teachers to update their knowledge with recent developments. Without missing every opportunity every teacher is developing his /her career prospect by attending and by presenting papers of their interest in such learned houses. Attending seminars, workshops and conferences and enrichment of knowledge has become the order of the day of the Department. Members of the Department have attended 30 seminars and 12 workshops and conferences. The prevailing research acumen in the Department is proved through the commitment of the teachers evinced in project guidance for undergraduate students and publication of research articles in national and international journals. As such 20 articles and 15 papers are presented and published by the members of the Department in well-recognized forum. In addition that two faculties were completed doctorial degree and other two are doing research work for their Ph. D degree and last one of our staff is doing the M. Phil degree.
