The Tamil Nadu Institute of Labour Studies was established in the year 1973 and upgraded as a first class Institute by the Government of Tamilnadu in the year 1978. It was functioning as a Government Department till 7-10-1987. Subsequently it was converted as a Society under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act, 1975 and started functioning as an autonomous body with effect from 8-10-1987.
The Institute is run by a high level committee constituted by the Government of Tamilnadu, called Governing Committee under the Charimanship of Honourable Minister for Labour. The Joint Commissioner of Labour or Joint Chief Inspector of Factories on other duty as Director, Tamil Nadu Institute of Labour Studies will be Ex-officio Secretary of the Governing Committee.
