Coonan Cross Church- The Koonan kurish old syrian church @Mattancherry is built on the land where the historical Coonan Cross oath (Leaning Cross Oath ) took place in 1653.The Koonan Kurishu Sathyam refers to the action of thousands of native Christians assembling at this church on 3rdJAN 1653 and taking an oath to preserve the traditions followed by them since AD 52 and resist the attempts to impose the Roman rituals amongst the native Christians by Portughese .The incident is the first attempt to resist colonialism and western invasion in India.
Portuguese army had destroyed the fourteenth century St Thomas Church and its Leaned Cross (Koonan Kurishu) immediately after the Coonan Cross Oath of AD 1653.
Coonan Cross Church has paramount position among Christian churches as it is home to the holy remains of St.George from AD 1751.
The renovated St George Church in Kochi, Mattancherry has been built using clay to keep faith with the ancient architecture heritage.Holy cross (Coonan Cross) is reinstalled at Mattanchery church during the renovation. Nubian technique is followed for Mattancherry Coonan Cross Church's construction.
