St. Xavier's College, Ranchi is a Minority Educational Institution based on religion which is established and maintained by the Ranchi Jesuit Province of the Society of Jesus. The College is registered by the Ranchi Province under the local title 'Xavier's Ranchi' under the Society's Registration Act XXI of 1860.

The Society of Jesus is a Christian Religious Order founded by St. Ignatius Loyolo in 1540. Since its foundation, the Jesuit Order, inspired by a Gospel vision of human beings and their destiny, has contributed to the Christian service of education throughout the world . This vision drawn from the life and teachings of Jesus Chirst gives Jesuit educational institutions a recognizable character and sets before their management, staff, students, parents and the community high ideals of life and service which will inspire them continuously to strive to meet the emerging needs and challenges. St. Xavier’s College is an educational institution, which strives to prepare men and women who will build a more just and humane world. It strives to attain an intellectual endeavour that focuses on critical and creative thinking, with the aim of social transformation. St. Xavier's College, Ranchi, is named after St. Francis Xavier, one of the founding members of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. A Jesuit saint of the 16th Century who travelled to India, Francis Xavier, born Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta (7 April 1506 – 3 December 1552) was a pioneering Roman Catholic missionary born in the Kingdom of Navarre (currently Spain-France) and co-founder of the Society of Jesus. He was a student of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and one of the first seven Jesuits, dedicated at Montmartre in 1534. He led an extensive mission into Asia, mainly in the Portuguese Empire of the time. He was influential in the spreading and upkeep of Catholicism most notably in India, but also ventured into Japan, Borneo, the Moluccas, and other areas which had thus far not been visited by Christian missionaries.
St. Xavier's College, Ranchi, was started by the Ranchi Jesuit Society, on July 3, 1944. Ever since 1889 and pre-independence era, when a number of secondary schools came into existence in Ranchi, the Society felt the need of starting a College. St. Xavier's College was started in 1944 and was first affiliated to Patna university; from 1950-1960 the college was under Bihar University and when the Ranchi University came into existence in 1960, the college was affiliated to Ranchi University. St. Xavier's College, Ranchi is a premier institution of the State of Jharkhand, imparting quality education and has remained a centre of excellence till date. This is a minority educational institution. It has been accredited by NAAC with Grade- "A" in 2013. The University Grants Commission conferred Autonomous status in 2005 and granted "College with Potential for Excellence" status in 2006.Inspired by this vision the Jesuit Order in India has been active in the field of higher education serving the nation in the context of plurality of religions and diversity of cultures. Across the world, the Society of Jesus, is responsible for over 1,865 Educational Institutions in 65 Countries. In India, the Society of Jesus, runs 153 High Schools, 38 University College, 14 Technical Institutes and 5 Business Administration Institutes. While Jesuit educational work has always been at the service of the whole nation, irrespective of caste and creed, it recognizes a special responsibility towards the Catholic community. The Ranchi Jesuit Province through the contributions of St. Xavier’s College envisions the educational development of the Jharkhand state with special attention to the needs of the tribal students of the region. The College draws its inspiration and vision from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and particularly from the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus in 1540 and from the life of St. Francis Xavier who established first educational institution in Goa. The College is named after this great scholarly saint.
Autonomy

In recognition of its service and to increase its efficiency still further, autonomy has been conferred on St. Xavier’s College with effect from July 2005. In the autonomy setup, this college has autonomy in the matter of - Framing its courses of studies; Arranging for instruction to the students; Devising methods of evaluation, examination and tests, pertaining to the admission of the students in the college and award of the degree/diploma by the Ranchi University. The college is affiliated to Ranchi University which will award degrees with the name of St. Xavier’s College mentioned on them. The College was Re-accredited with "Grade A" by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council 2013.

The crest of the college consists of three parts. IHS, the initial letters of the Greek words, Jesu, Huios, Soter – Jesus, Son, and Redeemer is the motto of the Society of Jesus. The little flower shows our aim to illumine the world and society. The ear of grain and the cog wheels represent agriculture and industrialization the goal of sound education in our present society.

The motto of this College is "Lucens et Ardens" which means, "Spreading Light and Burning Bright".

Affiliation

Although the College is affiliated to Ranchi University, the College is following the UGC Guidelines for Autonomous Colleges. The College offers I.A./I.Sc./I.Com. courses under the Jharkhand Academic Council, B.A./B.Sc./B.Com./Vocational degree Self-financing courses under autonomous pattern. The College offers P.G. Course in English, Hindi, Political Science, Economics, Geography, Commerce and P.G. Diploma in Human Rights and Bachelor in Education. courses under the autonomous system.

Class
Hours


The Commerce classes begin at 6.45 a.m. and end at 9.55 a.m. The Arts and Science classes run from 10.00 a.m. to 3.45 p.m. The evening section classes are conducted from 2.10 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.

The first bell for the class is rung five minutes before the commencement of the forenoon session and second bell at the commencement of the class. A bell is run at the end of each period.

At the first bell before each session the students shall go to their respective classes and take their seats so as to be present when the teacher enters. No student shall leave the classroom during the lecture without the permission of the teacher.

Leave
of
Absence


A student who requires leave for a class hour or more must apply for it in writing to the Head of the Department.

A student who applies for leave for a day or more must do so in writing countersigned by the parents/guardian. For Commerce, Arts and Science students the applications forwarded by the Vice Principal and must be submitted to the Head of Department to filed in the department itself.

The leave application of the Intermediate students must be countersigned by the parent/guardian and forwarded by Prof-in-charge and should be preserved by the student for future reference.

The evening section students should submit their application to Prof-in-charge of Evening Section.

A student who applies for leave on medical ground should attach a medical certificate along with the prescription, to his/her application from a Registered Medical Practitioner. Such an application must reach the concerned authority as mentioned above within five days of student's return to the class. The concerned Coordinator/ Prof.-in-charge/ Principal reserve the right to sanction or deny the leave.

A students should attend classes regularly and should have more than 75% attendance.

Continuous absence without leave for more than a month will render a student liable to have his/her name struck off the rolls of the college.

At the time of admission into Intermediate first year and Degree first year each student must pay the full fees at the beginning of the academic session itself. No partial payment is allowed, unless otherwise directed

For Intermediate second year and Degree second year and third year admission, every student must pay at least part of the fees at the beginning of the academic session itself failing which his name will not be entered in the admission and attendance registers.
