More about SPPD (Society For Poor People Development)

SPPD is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation that works to improve the living conditions of underprivileged people in the economically backward communities in Tamil Nadu (South India).

Our support of children also extends to empowerment of rural women – the primary carers of children, and to rebuilding local agriculture – the primary background of children in this area.

SPPD operates in semi-arid area. Due to insufficient top soil and irregular rainfall, the difficult economical situation in this area causes migration of the local residents.

Nearly 80% of the male community are forced to move to nearby districts seeking jobs as lorry drivers, servants in hotels, etc. Most of the time they stay away from their families, which increases the spread of the diseases like HIV/AIDS.

The women community migrate to nearby districts like Erode and Tanjore during the harvest period and return only after the harvesting is completed. Their wages are very low as they are seasonal unqualified workers.

Children in such families are left without attention and most of them drop out from schools. As they are neglected by their parents, they lack proper food, education, love, and care, which brings depression and deteriorates their health. This region is also notorious for child trafficking.

Taking all these issues into consideration, SPPD targets children who drop out from schools, who are abandoned, orphans, semi-orphans, and are HIV/AIDS affected
