Santipur Kalakushali

The year was 1987. Some young guys engaged in painting. But they had no unity. They needed a strong organization. They wanted to work within a system. Mr. Arun Sarkar who is an alumni of Indian College of Art and Craftsmanship, came forward. He was approached by those young artists. But Mr. Sarkar had no support. He needed a good and strong support. He approached Mr. Durga Roy who was a great, genius artist of Santipur. Mr. Roy had stretched his great hand of supporting. A new organization – ‘Kalakushali’ has been set up. This was the moment of starting. And from this the colourful journey was started. And this still now.
The first annual exhibition was organized in a local school, named ‘Bandhusabha’ . After some years the venue of annual exhibition was moved in another local school, named ‘Santipur Municipal School’. Still 2013 the exhibition was in that very school for every year. In the year 2007 a permanent art gallery was set up by this group in their main office –‘Kristi’, Bhagabati Das Road, Santipur. Eminent sculptor Gautam Pal visited in the opening ceremony of this gallery. And in the year 2014 a junior group named Parampara has been set up within Kalakushali with a goal of making next generation.
Kalakushali organized ‘Lalit Mohan Sen Memorial Lecture’ for three consecutive times (2008, 2009 & 2010). For some times Kalakushali could organized Exhibitions in some famous galleries at Kolkata so far. ‘Santipur Charukala Utsab 2014’ was organized by Santipur Kalakushali with a hand of help of ‘Santipur Rangapeeth’. Santipur Kalakushali plays an important role in every movement of any artistic work. Kalakushali also helps in the workshop in ‘Natya Kojagori’ –a whole night programme , celebrating ‘ World Theatre Day’, organized by Santipur Sanskritik. After all Santipur Kalakushali still working in the Extension of Art.
