Pakistan has one of the lowest forest covers in the world, at around 2.4% (UN FAO), and the highest annual deforestation rate in Asia. The underlying causes include rapid increase in population, low priority given to the forestry sector on the national agenda, controversial land tenure, lack of community participation (both individual and institutional), weak enforcement of regulation, and weak institutional framework.
To counter this, Sakro Farms were set-up in 2015, on self-owned private land covering 55 acres, based in Mirpur Sakro, District Thatta, Sindh. Being the first, and only, private forest in the area, this involved conducting training courses for capacity building of local villagers and hari’s, working on the lands.
