Sacred Heart Church Sattur

In 1911 Fr. Alphonse Hass S.J., died before completing the high steeple of the church. Among those who attended his funeral was a large group of his admirers from Tuticorin where he had worked earlier. These erected a marble monument in his memory. A literary monument is a Tamil poem by the Catholic poet of Tuticorin Mr. M.P. Mascarenhas.
Sathur is known for its St. Stanislaus Training School once run by the Jesuit Fathers, now by the Brothers of St. Gabriel
Up to 1906 Sathur was a sub-station of Srivilliputhur, Earlier it had a small chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and blessed by Mgr. Barthe in 1861.
One of its sub-stations Nenmeni has a shrine named after St. Ignatius. It is not certain whether this devotion owes its origin to an Irish soldier of the Hon’ble Company or to a French soldier who badly wounded escaped death due to the intercession of St. Ignatius or simply to some Jesuit missionary of the old society, but it is certain that around 1872 Fr. J.B. Trincal in charge of the Central District of Madurai Mission went to visit this shirne and in 1889 organised a pilgrimage to Nenmeni with his Christians. That day started the custom of celebrating the feast of St. Ignatius by a great concourse of people.
The recent parish priests were Frs. Allard S.J., Mariadas, S.S. Maria Susai, Nedungatt, S.J., V. Chacko Mattam, S.J., A Santiago, S.J., Balthasar Sebastian , Antony Etikal, N.P. Alphonse, S. Jeganathan, Fr. Fatima Nathan, Fr. Jeganivasgar, Fr. Edwin Sahayaraj, Fr. Rosario and Fr. Britto Raja Suresh.
Fr. N.P. Alphonse managed skillfully to solve a problem among the teachers, built a new church in Elayiram Pannai. Fr. S. Jeganathan started a Charismatic group which goes to neighbouring places to preach and to heal; Mr. Sahayam is guiding this group in their evangelisation.
