“Beyond Borders”
Rotaract Club of Colombo North ~ 2013/14

Walking back 22 years down the memory lane, the founding stone for our long journey was first kept when the Rotaract Club of Colombo North was chartered in 1992. This followed by a long pause, our revived journey begins as we rise back from ashes in 2010, under the Charter Presidency of Rtr. Mohamed Husni and breaking the long years of silence with the project “10.10.10” - 19th Installation ceremony of the Rotaract Club of Colombo North Chaired by Rtr. Mohamed Haseen Shibly who is being appointed as the President today at 22nd Installation Ceremony.

Upon revival in 2010, we paved the way towards “connecting youth – making a difference” while building upon a greater youth movement. Thereafter, we set our vision to “Enlighten, Aspire, Achieve”, focusing on an over-all balanced approach indicating equal progress in all four arenas. This approach then continued into the next year as well, with the theme “In youth we learn – With age we understand”, highlighting the importance of learning, development and the value of understanding the depth of this greater movement. And now, finally, it is time for us to move beyond borders.

“Make a Change – Local to Global” will hence be the official theme of Rotaract Club of Colombo North for the year 2013/14. Several factors were carefully considered in coming up with this theme. Rather than having a broad, generic perspective in all avenues during one Rotaract year, we decided to add weightage to one specific area of importance during this year. And accordingly, while still having a fairly balanced grip on all 4 avenues, our key focus for Rotaract year 2013/14 will be “International Understanding”, as we now feel that it is of time that we reach out to the rest of the global counterparts of our society – To move beyond borders, with love and respect towards diverse religions, ethnicities and cultures across the world. We also strongly believe that this change of path we are taking will directly contribute towards the District vision for the year 2013/14 – “One District, One Community”.
Looking back at the journey so far, we have set our mark as one of the most respected Rotaract clubs in the District 3220. Despite the amount of challenges and risks faced as a newly revived club, we received the District citation as the “Most Outstanding Rotaract Club of the Year Award” (revived clubs category) under the presidency of Rtr. PP Mohammed Husni. In addition, we also received the Rotary International Presidential as well as R.I District citations in the same year. We also received special recognition for hosting two district projects, “Cogs in Motion” and “Poya Day Initiative”.

Forming twinning agreements with Rotaract Club of Bangalore (Rotary International District 3190 and Rotaract club of Lahore (Rotary International District 3272) were also significant projects done during the 2010/11.

We were able to keep the momentum going in the next year under the presidency of Rtr. PP Adhil Bakeer Markar, receiving the “Most Outstanding Rotaract Club of the Year” award. We were also recognized for “YMUN” and “Tap Rugby” tournaments we organized under the International Understanding and Club Service arenas

Finally, under the leadership and guidance of Rtr. IPP Zalik Burah also we received several district citations while being awarded the “Most Outstanding Rotaract Club of the Year” for the third consecutive year. We were also prestigiously recognized for our Community Service project 12.12.12 – Building School Washrooms project, Chaired under the Director Community Service Rtr. Mohamed Haseen Shibly once again as the “Most Outstanding Community Service Project of the Year”. We are also proud to be part of Cluster 3 – Which was awarded the “Most Outstanding Cluster” of the year.

Standing strong as the of today with a member base of 30, we look forward to thrive and achieve during this upcoming year, as we “Make a Change – Local to Global”.
