History Of Paithani Saree:

Indian culture has given birth to many exotic weaving traditions. Paithani is one such craft tradition which dates to 200 BC.

Paithani saree is named after the Paithan town in Aurangabad Maharashtra state where the saree is woven by hand. Paithani Saris give a very elegant look with royalty and style.

Paithani is a hand-woven sari in gorgeous colours and intricate designs, a paithani saree is treasured as a valuable possession in every Maharashtrian family.

SILK WORKMANSHIP

Artisans of ancient Supratishthapuram city, presently known as Paithan, were gifted with this skill. Historians have noted fine paithani sarees with delicate gold and silver thread-work being sold in Greece in exchange for gold between 200 and 400 BC. Today, a few in yeola Paithani sarees weaved by paithani artists, the type of paithani sarees are like motifs: pejli (leaf), asawali, lotus border, panja, flying peacock, zardari and tota maina etc .,on pure silk.

Today zari has replaced gold threads in paithani work. Skilled artisans can make the motifs look so natural that it seems the leaves are just plucked from trees, the flowers are actually blooming on the silk cloth base, and the raised geometric shapes and the figures from the Ajanta caves leap out from the cloth. The paithani Sarees are weaved by using wooden loom ( dhota ), and scissors and kakda (threads wrapped in a roll of cloth).

Making a saree is a long process:

It takes a long time completing a piece. And it also needs lots of hard work and expertise to make this fine fabric. So, price of this paithani saree is always high. Nearly a month’s time is spent in completing a piece of simple Paithani saree, and from five to nine months is spent to complete its more elaborate (brocade) version.

Following are the processes:

1) Dying of silk as per the client Requirement

2) Arranging Silk on the Handloom for weaving

3) Weaving the paithani by using wooden loom ( dhota ), kakda (threads wrapped in a roll of cloth) etc.

4) Dying the the area of pallu silk in red color for because of pallu’s reach color.
