Red Spicy Pickles

No meal can be completed without a delicious, tangy pickle and no summer could be completed without the ritual of making them.

Growing up in my time there wasn’t a single household around, where homemade pickles were not part their daily meals. And not just one variety, you name a fruit or a vegetable and there would a pickle recipe that makes it better.
Even though you need patience to go through the entire process of pickle making, it never stopped our mothers and grandmothers to prepare different varieties of pickles.


Making a traditional pickle takes time, it starts with picking up the right ingredients then sun drying it, mixing the right blend oil and spices and finally letting it age in sun for few days.

Once the pickles are ready it would be placed in the dining area for family members to pick and choose from. But I don’t remember waiting so long, me and my siblings would let our taste buds experience the whole pickle aging process by stealing a bite while the pickles are still aging and enjoying the lip smacking rustic flavors.

Our grandma would not like it but what all options she had, we were the ones who could carry the big glass jars to the roof in the morning and bring them back in the evening. After sometime she would just give up if we only follow one rule, No Wet Hands!!!

I learned pickle making from my grandma, I especially enjoyed her meat pickle recipes which would always be a perfect mix of various spices relished in onions and savored with curd rice.

When I started making my own pickles, I experimented with different new ingredients, some came out good, other not so much, but pickles became a fascination for me.

Even Time, when seasoned and aged, turns into tasty bits of History.
