Ranchi University

Ranchi University is a public teaching-cum-affiliating university located in Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand, India. Established in 1960, the university now spans five districts of Jharkhand, namely, Ranchi, Gumla, Khunti, Simdega and Lohardaga. The current acting Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University is R. K. Pandey.HistoryRU was established on 12 July 1960 and its first vice chancellor was Vishnudeo Narayan Singh.In 1992, university was bifurcated to create Vinoba Bhave University, reducing its area by nearly half for proper administration. In 2009 university was divided twice – in January to create Nilamber Pitamber University, at Medininagar, and in August 2009 to create Kolhan University, at Chaibasa.FacilitiesThe university has a central library with approximately 150,000 books. There are a total of two male hostels and four female hostels in the university campus situated at Kutchery Road, Ranchi.AdministrationLike most state universities in India, the Chancellor of the university is the governor of the state - the Governor of Bihar until the inception of Jharkhand on 15 November 2000 and the Governor of Jharkhand since then. The chief executive of the university is the Vice-Chancellor.
