Pune Wildlife Division

In order to conserve wildlife sanctuaries, Maharashtra State Forest Department has divided them on District and Divisional level. Pune Wildlife Division represents sanctuaries from Pune, Solapur and Ahmednagar districts. Under this division there are five different sanctuaries viz. Bhimashankar Sanctuary, Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary, New Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary, Mayureshwar Sanctuary (Supe) and Rehkuri Sanctuary

Bhimashankar Sanctuary situated in Western Ghats is of great importance. Apart from being known as one of the 12 “Jyotirlinga”, Bhimashankar is also famous of “Giant Squirrel” (Shekroo). The forest here is very famous for its biodiversity.

Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary is located in Solapur districts at Nannaj. As it’s there in the name itself, this sanctuary is formed for conservation of "Great Indian Bustard"

New Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary is situated at Gangewadi which falls between Solapur and Osmanabad District

Mayureshwar Sanctuary is in Supe which falls in Baramati Taluka and is on a distance of 72 kms from Pune.Mayureshwar Sanctuary is very much famous for “Chinkara”.

Rehkuri Sanctuary is in Ahmednagar District and is on a distance of 140 kms from Pune. The grasslands are famous for Blackbucks
