BHARATANATYAM
A DANCE THAT MIRRORS NATURE
Bharatanatyam is an enigmatic classical art that brings to the factual world a surreal
world of expression. It is a replica of enthralling movements and expressions abound
in nature. It portrays life events immortalized in history, celebrated human
emotions and revelatory wisdom of different eras through an universal language
of 'harmonious sounds, steps, sways and expressions', largely derived from centuries of
‘keenly observing sounds and gestures of - human and species beings on Earth’.
VIBRANT ART OF
INDIAN HERITAGE
Though Bharatanatyam as an art is Universal by nature it remains a distinct flavour of
Indian heritage. It has flourished and evolved through centuries and has been a medium
that has espoused to the world many schools of thoughts, epic tales of righteous
conduct, pastimes of Gods and their ardent servitors. The vivid theatrical portrayals of
Bharatanatyam, brings to light the colossal spectrum of Indian Heritage and its diverse
colours of traditions.
A PERFECT RECIPE
FOR THE QUEST OF CHILDREN
Bharatanatyam is more than just dancing to rhythms. It channelizes the brimming
energy of childhood to give in return a host of benefits that children can carry along
throughout their lives. It encompasses hymns which are treasure troves of wisdom and
anecdotes of the past that teach ethics, morals and values. Thus it serves as a perfect
recipe for the growing quest of children, nurturing them into responsible social beings.
FLAIR THAT MAKES
STUDENTS VERSATILE
Bharatanatyam, as a performing art for extra-curricular learning, also enhances the
curricular performance of a student. It can be attributed to the training they get. The
word Bharatham is a combination of Bhava, Raga and Thalam. And for the three to
harmonize, a student must depict in absorption - mellow of portrayed
characters, musical hues of enacted songs and the message they signify - in concert with
the rhythmic movements of hands, legs and expressions of the face. Thus learning
Bharatanatyam heightens mind-body coordination and physical agility of a student
making him/her versatile and focused.

THE RENOWNED VAZHUVOOR LEGACY
Porsabai is founded and run by Smt. Nandini Murugan, a fervent practiser and
teacher of Vazhuvoor Bhani of Bharatanayam. Smt. Nandini Murugan began her training
into dance at the early age of five under Smt. Malathi Thothathri of Kalasagara Chennai.
She also learnt Music at Kalasagara, a fine academy of performing arts with four decades
of remarkable service in spreading cultural heritage of South India. Subsequently while
studying in college, she was introduced to Vazhuvoor bhani of Bharatanatyam by the
eminent Bharatanatyam Guru Thiru. Vazhuvoor S Palaniappan Avl. Ever since, her
expedition into the lore of Bharatanatyam had been a rewarding one. It instilled in her a
relentless passion to pursue and carry the distinguished Vazhuvoor legacy to earnest
aspirants of Bharatanatyam.
