OUR STORY:
September 2012 saw a monumental moment in the history of Indian Optometry. It was during this
moment that the Indian Optometry Federation (IOF) and the Association of Schools and Colleges
(ASCO) of India came together to establish a private, peer regulating council – the Optometry
Council of India (OCI). The OCI was established in order to meet the need of regulating the practice
standards and competence of the optometrists and Optometry Schools and Colleges in India.
This event marked the beginning of a new era for the profession and demonstrated that the
profession is securely established and ready to shoulder the responsibility of regulating itself and
setting stringent standards towards providing quality primary eye care services to the Indian
population.
.
Registration commenced in February 2014 and in the subsequent eight months the OCI has
registered over 500 optometrists, including Indian optometrists who are currently practising
abroad.
What do the optometrists registered with OCI have to say about registering: …….
1. Babu Noushad (M.Optom, FLVPEI, FIACLE), Faculty in Optometry, College of Health Sciences,
University of Buraimi, Sultanate of Oman.
“Optometry Council of India (OCI) is a self-regulatory body which registers qualified Optometrists in
the country. Registration details with a regulatory body are one of the important information to be
furnished when we apply for jobs and higher studies in foreign countries. Hence, registering with OCI
gives us that edge in taking our career forward.”
2. Usman Memom, faculty at Nagar school of Optometry,
"Vision without action is only a dream; Action without vision just passes the time; Vision with
passion can change the world! I feel that Optometry Council of India has the passion and vision to
change eye care in India as well as optometry as a profession”
3. Vinod Maseedupally Postdoctoral fellow, School of Optometry and Vision Science University of
New South Wales, Rupert Myer Building North, Kensington Campus 2052
"I used my OCI registration number to get identified as a registered optometrist from India by
Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand. I was really delighted by OCI for their quick
response for my online registration. Thanks for the timely help. I suggest all Indian optometrists to
get registered with OCI, NOW!"
