National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj(NIRD & PR), an organisation of the Ministry of Rural Development, GoI, is a premier training and research institute in the field of rural development in india. Its training , research and action research have symbiotic relationships through which NIRD plays a key role in identifying the factors contributing to the effectiveness of development programs and also helps
build the capacities of a large number of development functionaries. NIRD trains around 25,000 senior and middle level officers , planners and rural development functionaries every year. Since its inception,the Institute organised nearly 1300 research studies on various issues related to Rural Development and has brought out over 400 publications.

The workshops and seminars of NIRD provide opportunity of various stakeholders to share their viewpoints and experiences vis-a-vis the development issues.The recommendations provide useful feedback to the policy makers and programme executives in designing policies and programmes in more innovative and participative ways. As an apex training institution, NIRD plays an important role in structuring and strengthening RD institutional networks in the area of capacity building of rural development functionaries.

NIRD organizes several international training programmes for the benefit of development functionaries of the Asian and African countries. As a member of the Center on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and Pacific(CIRDAP) and Afro-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO), it has been offering its services in the areas of training and research and in strengthening of training institutions of the member countries. NIRD has established its sevices to various national and international organisations.

providing solutions to the problems in programme execution in partnership with the development agency personnel and community is the main thrust of Action Research Activity of NIRD. The action research projects constitute the social laboratories in which NIRD and the collaborating organisations experiment with new ideas as well.
