National Institute of Fashion & Technology - NIFT Hyderabad

National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is a fashion institute in India. It was set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and is an institution of design, management and technology for the international fashion business. NIFT has been granted statutory status under the act of Parliament of India in 2006, empowering the Institute to award degrees and other academic distinctions.

NIFT, ranked as the premier institute of fashion management and technology in India, is the founder member of "Fashion Schools' Foundation of the World", which comprises 34 fashion schools worldwide. Many notable designers like Prabal Gurung, Ritu Beri, Manish Arora, Rajesh Pratap Singh, JJ Valaya, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, to name a few, are NIFT alumni. In 2006, the Parliament passed the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Bill, 2005, thereby receiving a statutory status and empowering the institute to grant its own degrees and other academic distinctions. It also counts among the coveted list of an Institute of National Importance by the Parliament of India.

With its head office in New Delhi, NIFT has centers at Mumbai, Kolkata, Kangra, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Raebareli, Patna, Shillong, Bhopal, Taliparamba, Bhubaneswar and Jodhpur where it offers four-year bachelor and two-year master programmes in the areas of Design, Management and Technology.

In 2013, NIFT Gandhinagar was allotted an extra 30 seats in Fashion Design department under NRI quota in response to its the center's ever-growing demand and quality. Latest surveys rank NIFT Delhi, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar as the top 3 centers in terms of education and placement.

A new center in Kashmir, too, is expected to be inaugurated in a year's time. This would be NIFT's 16th center across India.

A new NIFT Campus at Ludhiana, Punjab has been announced by Minister of Textiles.

Academic Programs[edit]

The regular, full-time programs at NIFT are run at two levels namely the Graduate level and the Post Graduate level, however, NIFT has also recently launched its PhD program. NIFT has an agreement for Dual Degree with Fashion Institute of Technology, with the selected students from NIFT receiving a Dual Degree from both NIFT and Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, USA. At the Masters' level NIFT offers Master of Fashion Management, Master of Design and Master of Fashion Technology.

Apparel Production - B.F.TECH UG Degree
This programme, offered by the Department of Fashion Technology, is designed to train students in the core garment manufacturing technology, with emphasis on apparel production and information technology.

Accessory Design - Fashion Accessory & Lifestyle Products UG Degree
The Accessory Design program of NIFT started in 1991 and was available for seven years only at NIFT Delhi. Previously available as a three-year diploma course, the Accessory Design program is now a four-year degree course. It is available in Delhi, Kangra, as AD and Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Shillong and Bhopal as F&LA.

Fashion Design - UG Degree
The Fashion design department has been instrumental in bringing about a paradigm shift in design perception in India. It works closely with fashion professionals in order to evolve a unique fashion identity universally relevant and acceptable, for a global audience. with a three – pronged approach, the programme is strengthened with an increased relevance to the fashion Industry in India and with a mission to create a global identity in design. Its offered at Bengaluru, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kannur, Kangra, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Rae Bareli, Patna, Shillong & Bhubaneswar.

Fashion Communication - UG Degree
Fashion Communication is a four-year undergraduate degree program. It prepares student for professional work in Photography, Graphic Design, Visual Merchandising, Fashion Journalism, Advertising, Retail Management and Event Management.

Knitwear Design - UG Degree
The course was earlier a two-year post graduate diploma program introduced in the year 1994 at NIFT, Delhi but is now a four-year undergraduate program available at multiple centres. The centres conducting this technology program are at Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. It is structured with a view to the requirements of the knitwear industry in Ludhiana and Tripur, both centres of garment exports to other countries. The graduates of this program also find employment in the thriving domestic brands and retail industry in Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Bangalore.

Textile Design - Fashion & Textile Design UG Degree
Textile design forms the core of the whole business of fashion. The rapidly expanding activities in the export and domestic sectors of the Indian apparel and home fashion industry demands professional inputs in design and development of textiles and raw material, which is responsible for 60-80% of the cost of the product. Textile design today is that strategic value adding activity that can make all the difference in transforming a fashion business into an economically viable and profitable proposition. Its offered at Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kangra, Kannur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Jodhpur, New Delhi & Patna.

Leather Design - Fashion & Leather Design UG Degree
Leather design programme of NIFT is unique as it offers advanced study in Leather garments, goods & accessories, footwear and lifestyle accessories. Its offered at Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi and Rae Bareli.

Master of Design - M.DES. PG Degree
The Master of Design is a research centric multidisciplinary design program. Students can choose design specializations in Fashion, Textiles and Communication Design.

Master of Fashion Management - M.F.M. PG Degree
MFM is a two-year PG Programme in Fashion Management (erstwhile AMM) that started in 1987. It is offered by the FMS Dept. The objective of the program is to develop managerial skills in the field of Fashion Advertising, Communication, Marketing, Retailing and Merchandising best suited to the requirements of the fashion & luxury retail (both offline and online), fashion product export and allied sectors.

Master of Fashion Technology - M.F.Tech. PG Degree
MFT is a two-year PG Programme in Fashion Technology, Formally known as GMT(Garment Manufacturing Technology).This programme, offered by the Department of Fashion Technology. The objective of the program is to develop managerial skills in the field of Fashion Technology, Production Management and Merchandising.
