It is a more than a century old underground shaft mine and washery. Due to the presence of coal washery, the Damodar river is badly polluted, making its water unusable for local community. Bharat Coking Coal Limited also operates a power plant based on coal bed methane, which is found profusely in Moonidih underground mines.
