MGM Center of Human Movement Science was established in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT – B) and International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) to address an urgent need to integrate clinical biomechanics in Indian healthcare. The centre was inaugurated by visionaries in this area namely: Dr Anil Kakodkar - Chairman Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission, Shri Kamal Kishore KadamJi -Chairman Mahatma Gandhi Mission Trust, Prof. Dr. Ravindra Bapat, Seth GS Medical College, Prof. B. Ravi, BETiC- IITB and Prof. Robert Van Deursen, Cardiff University, UK on 5th October 2015 which was graced by the presence of eminent doctors and engineers of the country. Following an intense training session of Physiotherapists and engineers, the Centre is now open for movement analysis testing for patients, training of health care professionals and engineers in clinical biomechanics and interdisciplinary research projects.
Interdisciplinary collaborative research projects are continuously designed and implemented at the Centre to address health care needs of India. To name a few ongoing projects in the current year-in collaboration with BETiC, IITB, the department is involved in designing an indigenous device for plantar tissue stiffness measurement for its application in people with reduced foot sensations such as diabetes, leprosy etc. DBT has recently sponsored a project to develop a powered trans-tibial prosthesis in collaboration with IITB.
