The northern bank of Periyar is famous for being the birthplace (Puthiyedam) of Shakthan Thampuran one of the reputed kings who ruled the Kochi state.(1790-1805) There is an ancient temple in Puthiyedam. Nearby the temple, the famous pilgrim centre of the Christian community, St. Sebastian Church, Kanjoor is cituated.
