Lakhipur College

In the year 1969, when there was the quest for scientific and technological education all over the world, the people of awareness inspired them to establish a college at Lakhipur. As a result, the Arts college, ventured with the name ‘Lakhipur College’, was opened by Late Jyotikona Choudhury on the 10th August, 1981.
The common people of the vast area irrespective of caste and creed extended their full financial support through donations at the rate of 10 Paisa per liter of kerosene oil, per kg of rice and sugar etc., Rs. 2.50 per quintal of jute sold by the peasants at J.C.I., Lakhipur, Rs. 2.00 on each cattle sold and purchased at Lakhipur Bazaar, 20 Paisa on each ticket at Gaurishankar Video Hall and Raj-Rup Cinema Hall (now Durga Talkies), in the establishment of Lakhipur College with the hope to achieve mental development, intellectual growth, advancement of learning process of their children which was proposed at the Head Quarter (Rajdhani) of the erstwhile Mechpara Estate, the birth place of Late Nagendra Narayan Choudhury, the former President of Assam Sahitya Sabha, in spite of the opposition of some people of Lakhipur having no place in the management.
Late Dr. T.C. Rastogi, M.A. (Triple), the retired Principal joined in 1982 with his unforgettable impressive personality and high scholarship. He did his best for the expansion and development of the college on the desired line, bit had to exit within less than six months owing to unavoidable circumstances, which is a routine work in the management of educational institutions especially at the venture stage.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam Late Hiteswar Saikia, the man of the Nation, the Hon’ble Education Minister Late Mukut Sharma, the Hon’ble Minister of Irrigation Late Zohurul Islam added a new life to the college by their gracious presence in the foundation stone laying ceremony of the permanent college building by the Chief Minister at the present site on 08-05-1984 with the financial grant of Rs. 1.00.000 (One Lac) and the first Govt. letter covering the Govt. concurrence of start P.U (Arts) class handed over to the college including the sanction of Ad-hoc grant of Rs. 1,000 per month w.e.f. 01-08-1984.
To link up education with nature and promoting aesthetic sense of education the institute has taken a great effort in the field of plantation covering the boundary of 68.5 bighas of land allotted by the Govt. of Assam to heel the ecological imbalance and deforestation prevailing in the world.
In fine Lakhipur College is full fledged college under deficit system of grants-in-aid on 11th January, 1996, with Major permission from Gauhati University in all subjects, having sufficient number of teaching and non-teaching staff with adequate representation of female in each branch in this co-educational institution.
The college successfully obtained Permanent Affiliation from Gauhati University, Society Registration from the Govt. of Assam and registered under Section 2 (F) and 12B of UGC act in the year 2004. The NAAC (National Assessment & Accreditation Council) visited Lakhipur College on 31st December, 2004 and 1st January, 2005. The Peer team of NAAC comprising three important personality expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure, management, teaching and non-teaching staff and students of the college. The college is awarded ‘B’ Grade. The college community, well wishers and the general expressed satisfaction with the gradation in most cheerful manner.
