Kosi Bird Observatory - KBO

Koshi Bird Observatory (KBO) is a managed as an offshoot of the Nepalese not-for-profit organization Himalayan Nature. We are a research station, based in the Terai region of eastern Nepal, just minutes from the famous Koshi River, situated between the Patnali Forest (Charkose Jhadi) and Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. We offer accommodation to visitors with comfortable and secure rooms, internet, research facilities and a fantastic local food prepared by our in-house chef Bimal, whose delicious food will keep you well fed while you’re out in the field trying to spot over half of the total bird species found in Nepal.
Along with being a research station, KBO ensures that the local community is made aware of the significance of conservation to the maintenance, and indeed enhancement, of local biodiversity and sustainable practice. This is done through a variety of ways which include; community awareness programs and workshops, informative street acts/plays involving local kids, organizing conservation rallies, school and student programs which develop species identification skills including bird-watching training. All of these initiatives help to build strong relationships, and ensure that when our future generations become leaders, they have a better knowledge and understanding of environmental management.
The Terai region of Nepal is a very special place, both environmentally and culturally. Our hope in creating this page is that with the establishment of NGO based ecotourism; we will be able to continue providing a service to the Terai communities within the KBO area, by maintaining a place which encourages local participation and sustainable practice. Through doing this, we hope to improve conservation outcomes for Himalayan Nature.
