Jyoti-Bishnu-Hemango created a multi-cultural. The Bard of Brahmaputra Dr. Bhupen Hazarika spread the message of love and humanity across the world.

However, time has changed. Assam is now going through tough time. Religious and ethnic intolerance is mounting high. The economic growth and human development have been dwarfed. A series of ethnic violence, insurgency and counter-insurgency and the devastating flood almost every year is adding misery to the life of Assamese people. A large number of people are being displaced by recurrent ethnic conflicts as well as perennial natural calamities. At the same time cases of civil, political and human rights violation and impunity is increasing without any break.

In this crucial juncture of time, Abdul Kalam Azad, then a post graduate student at Tata Institute of Social Sciences teamed up with a group of likeminded cross cultural youths and pledged to work for the betterment of Assam and its people. Thus Jhai Foundation came into being with a vision to see a just and humane society. Jhai Foundation was formally registered on 6th of June, 2014 as a civil society organization under Societies Registration Act – 1860. ‘Jhai’ (tamarix dioicia) is name of a special plant which grows in riverine areas of Assam.
