Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar Polytechnic

Erstwhile Jhargram Polytechnic was established in the year 1957 with the initiative of Raja of Jhargram Narasingha Malla Deb within the premises of Kumud Kumari Institute Jhargram. The foundation stone for the present Institute building at Sevayatan was laid on 12 th June 1957.
The first batch of student LCE and LME graduated in the year 1960and LEE in Aug 1962. The institute was renamed after the illustrious son of the soil Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar during 1969-70. In the year 1976 the Institute was taken over by Government of West Bengal.
The year 2005 was eventful considering the fact that a 4 Yr. Part Time Diploma Course in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering under West Bengal State Council of Technical Education was introduced in the institute with the financial assistance from Backward Class Welfare Department of Govt.of West Bengal. In this year itself the institute was also given affilation by WBSCVET as a Vocational Training Center for the X+2 Level course in Engineering and Technology Discipline with Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning as a vocational paper.
In the year 2006 the institute was selected as a Vocational Training Center for imparting training to Tribal unemployed youth of the region in the following vocational trades i.e. Radio, Tape, Television Repairing , Diesel pump Set Repairing, Two wheeler and Power tiller Repairing, Sal plate Making, Fancy Products of Jute and Babui and Mat making. In this programme each trainee is exposed to minimum of two trades within the training duration of one year. Entrepreneurship Development Programme is integral part of the scheme. Trainees are also provided with stipend for attending the course.
It is a moment of rejoice that in this golden jubilee year a new course of Diploma in Metallurgy Engineering under WBSCTE has been introduced from the academic session 2007-08 and at the same time a state of the art Computer facility has been added to the institute. The inaugural programme of golden jubilee celebration on 12th june 07 was inaugurated by Hon'ble Minister in Charge Technical Education and Training Sri Chakradhar Maikap. In this very year the Institute has been given the institutional membership of Indian Society of Technical Education , New Delhi.
The institute is also serving as a nodal center for 120 vocational training centers of the district of Paschim Medinipur and helping the cause of spreading technical education among the masses.
The Training and Placement Cell of the Institute has been able to place a good number of students in different organization s. The placement Cell has also been entrusted with the additional responsibility of coordinating with other polytechnics of the region that is Dr.MSIT Haldia, Contai polytechnic, Purulia polytechnic, K. G. Engineering Institute Bishnupur and Placement cell of the Directorate of Technical Education and Training Govt. of West Bengal.
The Community polytechnic Cell of the Institute was responsible for providing need based vocational training to the rural masses of the region for the last twenty five years and more through its various Training programmes.
The Institute has been able to form a strong bond with its alumni during this golden jubilee year and with their meaningful support and initiatives the current students and the institute as a whole will be benefited.
I am confident in coming years with the relentless effort of all concerned the institute will grow further in Stature and repute and will earn many laurels for its contribution towards technical education and will be touching many milestones in its journey.
