iRead is a centre that nurtures the art of reading and effective language comprehension through a world renowned program "Jolly Phonics" adopted in over 100 countries . What is phonics ?

Phonics is a method of teaching children to read with the help of sounds (phonetics).Phonics enables the child to develop reading habit , spell with ease , enables proper English pronunciations resulting in strong communication capabilities.


How does Jolly Phonics work?

Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the five key skills for reading and writing. Complemented by Jolly Readers and Jolly Grammar, providing a thorough foundation for literacy.

The five skills taught in Jolly Phonics

1.Learning the letter sounds
Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds.
2.Learning letter formation
Using different multi-sensory methods, children learn how to form and write the letters.
3.Blending
Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words.
4.Identifying the sounds in words (Segmenting)
Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling.
5.Tricky words
Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.

How does Jolly Grammar work?

By teaching key essential grammar rules, it helps children bring diversity to their writing and improve their spelling in a structured way.
Jolly Grammar teaches a wide range of language forms including the parts of speech, plurals, punctuation, and the tenses past, present, and future. It also teaches a wide range of spelling rules, including defining aspects such as the short vowel and other areas of literacy lessons such as group reading, creative writing, and comprehension exercises
Jolly Grammar uses colours and actions to help children identify parts of speech in sentences, for example verbs are red and nouns are black. The colours and actions not only make the grammar lessons fun for the children, but also make the grammatical terms easier for them to learn.
