The school began functioning on November 6, 1861, in a bungalow that was situated near the present railway station and later, after seven years, it was moved to the present premises
Description
In the early days, the school was known as Government Western Norman School it was the only educational institution between Mangalore and Thalassery, say records.

Initially, the school was a training centre for various performing arts and in 1879, it became an 'Anglo Vernacular School' and in 1886, it was taken over by the Kannur Municipality.

Over the years, the school has contributed many eminent personalities to the world of politics as well as sports and culture, including Chettoor Shankaran Nair, E Ahamed, O Bharathan, Pampan Madhavan Olympians P T Usha, Devadas, Musthafa, football legend V P Sathyan among others.

The sports division of the school, which was started in 1976, has 190 girl students studying in different classes up to Plus Two. P T Usha was a student in the first batch, and coach O M Nambiar was the trainer in the school during that time.


The 150th year celebration of Kannur Govt Vocational Higher Secondary School, also known as the Municipal High School, would be inaugurated on January 5 by Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.


As part of the 150th year celebrations, the organizing committee has planned various programmes for the whole year, including arts and sports events, seminar.
