SAMVARDHAN started its work in 2007 focusing on two pressing issues of this region viz. degraded natural resources and hampered livelihood of concerned people. Initially, we have concentrated our attention on the issue of river conservation and associated people. However, as our understanding built, we came to know that about the 80% geographical area of the river basin is under the agriculture land use pattern and until and unless we do not address the issues of the farming community the goal of river conservation will not achieve. The problem of the agriculture and related farmers are varied and needs holistic ecosystem approach. The suggested program considers farming as complex ecosystem of various interlinked components. There is natural balance, dynamism and feedback mechanism among various components. Due to various anthropogenic factors there is imbalance which is leading to various problems, the extreme among it is episodes of suicides among farmers. Present concept note argues that holistic ecosystem approach based on the principles of adaptive management is needed to ameliorate the problem. We believe that, increased cost of the cultivation, wide spread environmental degradation, increasing market dependency of farmers, and eroding traditional decision making and conflict resolution systems in the villages are root causes behind the problems.
The diverse activities carried out by SAMVARDHAN are, the establishment of local decision making and conflict resolution systems, capacity building of these systems for sustainable agriculture, promotion of low cost agriculture, conservation of the traditional varieties of cultivar, water and soil conservation, promotion of the organic farming, promotion of off-farm income opportunities and market intervention.
For market intervention, we have registered for Producer Company of the local farmers under the Company Registration Act 2013. The name chosen by the local farmers for the company is GREENZA PRODUCER COMPANY LTD.
