Government College Madappally

Government College Madappally is the first Government college in Kerala to be accredited at ‘A’ level by NAAC. The college was established in 1958 with two pre-university classes and 160 students. This institute of higher education is the biggest in this part of the state with two building complexes having a plinth area of about 9900 sq.mts situated in a sprawling, verdant and salubrious campus of 27.19 acres. The campus is on a small hillock in Onchiyam Panchayath near N.H. 17 and facing Arabian Sea between Vatakara in the South and Mahe in the North. This is the only major centre of higher education between Calicut and Tellicherry. Majority of its students belong to underprivileged rural background. Currently the college offers 10 courses at UG level and 5 at PG level with a student intake of 1200 at UG level and 126 at PG level. Until 2008-09 the degree programmes were offered under annual system. From 2009-10 the curriculum at UG level has been restructured as Choice based Credit and Semester system. PG courses are offered under semester system. Besides the regular programmes, the college also offers add-on courses on Tourism studies and Soft skill development. It has been recently selected as a partner college in the first ‘cluster of colleges’ in North Kerala.
