Golaghat is an administrative district of Assam with headquarters located at Golaghat town. The district is bounded by the river Brahmaputra on the northern side, by the state of Nagaland on the south; the district Jorhat on the East and Karbi Anglong and Nagaon district of Assam on the west.
Golaghat district derived its name from the shops of the Marwari people who settled their business at the bank of river Dhansiri near Golaghat town during mid-20th century. Golaghat is a combination of two words - 'Gola' which means shop and 'Ghat' meaning the landing point of river ferry. The district is also the gateway to renowned Kaziranga National Park.
