Founded in 1949, the Family Planning Association of India is the country`s leading voluntary family planning organisation. Composed of volunteer members and staff, it has its Headquarters in Mumbai and 40 Branches, 13 Integrated Rural Projects and three Area Projects spread across the country. Its aim is to promote knowledge of family planning as a basic human right, as well as population policies which can help to bring about a balanced development of the resources of the country, as a means towards raising the quality of life. FPAI is non-political, non-sectarian and non-profit making.
In India, only 25 percent of health practitioners work in rural areas - the poorest and most needy communities - where 75 percent of the population resides. The FPAI is helping in this endeavour through its network of over 100,000 volunteers spread throughout the country taking vital reproductive and sexual health information and services to the most marginalised communities.
