Dr B R Ambedkar Center For Biomedical Research - ACBR

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Center for Biomedical Research (ACBR) is a unique center under the University of Delhi wherein a multi-specialty group of scientists work as a cohesive team and carryout active teaching and research. The absence of a formal departmental setup provides an excellent environment where faculties interact with each other freely that enhances better teaching and research in the complementary areas. The emphasis of research investigations is mainly on chemistry and biology and is being carried out in some of the frontline areas of basic and applied biomedical sciences such as Drug Discovery and Drug Development, Medical Biotechnology, Molecular Modeling and DNA Diagnostics, Molecular Oncology, Immunology, Genomics & Proteomics, Medicinal Chemistry, Cancer Genetics, Human Genetics and Neuropharmacology. Within a small span of time, ACBR has earned its name and fame both at the National and International level.

To promote scientific discourse among investigators and students, ACBR has developed active collaborations with several Institutes such as; Institute of Genomic and Integrative Biology (CSIR), Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), Defense Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), V.P. Chest Institute (VPCI), Institute of Cytology & Preventive Oncology (ICMR), National Institute of Immunology (NII), International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) and other science departments of the University and other research Institutes and Medical Organizations in Delhi. These collaborations have not only benefitted the interacting labs but have also resulted in scientific publications in high impact factor peer reviewed journals.

In addition, ACBR is proud to have developed a bench to bedside diagnostic product in the area of Sexually Transmitted Disease and the successful transfer of the technology to industry. The same was recognized recently by the Department of Biotechnology with the ‘Biotech Product and Process Development and Commercialization Award 2013’ to Prof. Daman Saluja.

With qualified and reputed scientists as faculties and with state of the art laboratory facilities and infrastructure, ACBR has a unique 4 semesters (2 years) M.Sc.-Ph.D. Combined Degree Course in Biomedical Sciences, wherein about 50 students are admitted every year through an all India-based Entrance Test and Interview. With a low students-teacher ratio along with expert guest faculties, ACBR ensures close collegial relationships. Intensive laboratory training summer projects and research dissertation during IV semester, gradually inculcate scientific temperament and the ability to think and work independently amongst students. The richness of the University's intellectual environment and an interdisciplinary curriculum of teaching provide a unique platform for development of an all round scientific career. Organization of special invited lectures by experts from various Institutes, Universities and seminars and conferences expose both M.Sc. and Ph.D. students to latest trends in biomedical research. ACBR offers several scholarships and stipends to meritorious, poor and deserving students including single girl child fellowships and the most prestigious ten “Catch Them Young” fellowships of CSIR.

Additionally, ACBR also coordinates an undergraduate B.Sc. (Hons.) course in Biomedical sciences in three premier university colleges- Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences, Dwarka; Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences, Vivek Vihar; and Acharya Narendra Dev College, Kalkaji.

With the untiring efforts of ACBR and generous support from the University of Delhi, University Grants Commission, DST, DBT, CSIR and ICMR, the Center has achieved another milestone by building two more floors to develop modern classrooms, library, central instrumentation facility and new research laboratories. ACBR has recently added several sophisticated instruments including the facility for NMR, Flow Cytometry and Confocal Microscopy.

Thus, having begun in 1998, ACBR has since made outstanding contributions in research and teaching. Each year a significant number of our students qualify the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by CSIR/UGC and get admission to Ph.D. program in top rank Institutes in India and abroad. Students have made ACBR and University of Delhi proud by achieving their academic heights and getting many prestigious fellowships in India and abroad. We sincerely hope that our efforts towards offering a strong curriculum with a mission to provide a unique experience and training, unparalleled in Indian education, will facilitate development of intellectual leaders and academics in biomedical sciences to the service of the Nation.
