HISTORY OF DON BOSCO HIGH SCHOOL
The Salesians of Don Bosco (S D B) founded by Don Bosco in 1864 today number 1755 , spread over 1676 provinces in 103 nations throughout the world. The Salesian Society comprises of Priests and Lay Brothers. The word “Salesian” is from the name of the patron, “St Francis de Sales”, a saint much admired by Don Bosco for his conversion from an angry young man to a kind and gentle Bishop.
The Salesian Fathers felt the need of their services in Yerwada in the year 1974 and earnestly strived to meet the needs of the poor in the Yerwada locality. In 1958 a Jesuit Priest, Fr Mascarenhas began a one room school for the children of the Tamil speaking community. It was called Fatima Tamil Medium School . In June 1972 permission for the shift of medium to English and permission for a full fledged school was granted by the Education Officer. So the school was called Fatima English Medium High School from then on and continued to exist on the banks of the Mulla Mutha River . The Secondary classes in the morning and the Primary section functioned in the afternoons.
The Pune Diocese then took over the management of the school for sometime before they handed over the charge of the school to the Don Bosco Education Trust, Mumbai in April 1974. The first Salesian Principal was Br. Joseph Mascarenhas. He was followed by late Fr. Benedict Furtado who was in charge of the school for one year.
