More about Department of Zoology, Barasat College

The department started it's journey in July, 2004, with the affiliation to University of Calcutta for general course only. The department got it's first, only teacher (Prof. Jyotirmoy Shankar Deb) in October, 2004.
Only 8 students were admitted in 2004, most of them got wrong subject combinations due to lack of knowledge of the college staffs, finally 3 students continued. In the next year, almost 15 students got admitted.
From the 1st batch, only 1 student sat for the exam and passed. In the subsequent year, all the students sat for the exam and all of them passed. 1 student ranked in the University merit list too!
In the year 2007 (November) the department organized it's 1st excursion to Panchmarhi, MP. It faced a lot of objections from the college authority, but finally it made a landmark for long tour in the history of the college.
For the first 4 years, the students faced a lot of problems, like deficiency of books and instruments. But, the homely atmosphere and good relationship between students and the only teacher, with a single non-teaching staff for all of the 6 science departments, made it possible to get it's permanent affiliation from the University. In the meantime, the department as well as college faced the 1st NAAC visit and got appraisal from the NAAC team for its' extensive classes, good results and well maintained laboratory, although presence of only a single faculty member.
The science faculty published its' first magazine "Vision" in the year 2006, with the active involvement of the department.
In the year 2009-10, the second faculty member (Prof. Tirthankar Dalui) joined the department. The only laboratory attendent (Palash Roy) also joined in the same period of time. This fact made the department strong enough to run in a good pace.
Finally, in the year 2013, the department got the Honours course affiliation from the West Bengal State University and it is now running with a total of more than 100 students including 1st, 2nd and 3rd year Honours students. Almost 120 students are studying in General course too. The passed out students are successfully established in different government and private sectors. The teachers are engaged in a number of national and international bodies which enlightened the Zoology Department among all the departments of the college.
