The Department has 60+ faculty members, 700 UG students, 245 PG students and 63 permanent supporting staff. The Department offers academic programmes leading to B.Tech., Dual Degree (B.Tech & M.Tech.), M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees. Last year about 140 students received their degrees.
The faculty members are grouped under three broad specializations - Design, Manufacturing and Thermal & Fluids Engineering. They have been engaged in research in all the classical areas of Mechanical Engineering and upcoming areas too. The academic activities are supported by 20 laboratories. Two new laboratories, Suman Mashruwala MEMS laboratory and Mechatronics Measurement and Instrumentation laboratory, were inaugurated in the last year. The Department has decided recently to focus major research efforts in the following five areas: Computational Mechanics, Nuclear Thermal Hydraulics; CIM; Refrigeration, A/C and Cryogenics; and MEMS, NEMS and Mechatronics.
There are currently 40 ongoing projects, of which 15 are major with an outlay of 7.42 crores. The faculty has been active in offering consultancy services to industries and conduct courses regularly to facilitate the continuing education of practicing engineers. The consultancy services led to an income of about 1 crore rupees in the last year (2006-07).
The Mechanical Engineering Dept at IIT Bombay is one of the largest in terms of faculty, students, and activities, continues to lead and expand its activities in various directions. The Department is known for research and projects in robotics, fluid dynamics, heat pumps, cryogenics, nuclear engineering, fracture mechanics, I. C. Engines, Combustion, CFD, CAD-CAM and other areas. Experimental and computational facilities are being continuously upgraded. Industry interaction has been increased with several postgraduate courses being offered to industry participants, and many students working in industry-sponsored projects.
