Economics: A Way of Thinking : Economics is often called the study of how to resolve scarcity so as to best satisfy our wants and needs — how to allocate scarce resources, such as money, natural resources, our time, or our energy, among their many competing uses. That's the subject of economics.

Perhaps more important, though, is that economics is a way of thinking. The most important thing you'll get from studying economics is that you'll learn to "think like an economist" — developing skill at identifying the essential elements of a problem, and developing the analytical skills for finding solutions.

This economic way of thinking and analyzing can be applied to a remarkable range of problems, in many different fields: how to make good individual decisions and good business decisions; how to take account of strategic considerations; how to explain human behavior (and even animal behavior!); how to address public policy issues such as unemployment, inflation, pollution, and international trade and politics.

New ways are always being discovered to apply the economic way of thinking: to marriage, divorce, and fertility; to intellectual property and the Internet; to the ecological balance of nature; to just about anything people, animals, firms, and governments do.

Careers in Economics : Consequently, studying economics gives you a superb preparation for many careers in business, law, government, education, and consulting. Graduates with a bachelors degree in economics are sought by financial institutions, by consulting firms, by government agencies, by law schools and business schools, and by business firms of all kinds and all sizes. This is reflected in the salaries that economics graduates command — and not only at the beginning of their careers, but also in growth of income throughout their careers.

Post Graduate and Research Department of Economics : The Department of Economics is the leading faculty in the campus of Pope’s college. B.A Degree course was established in 1966 and M.A course was added in 1987. The department has been upgraded as a research institute to run M. Phil and Ph. D courses from the year 2011-12. The department also offers a certificate course on “Dress Designing” for first year students. God has blessed the department abundantly over the years with doctoral degrees in possession of nine members of its staff. This is an incredible attainment in the outskirt of M.S. University, Tirunelveli.

Staff members of the department : Former staff members and their service records are given as follows: Mr.G.R.Fredrick M.A (Eco)., M.A. (His.) (1962 – 1973); Mr.J.D. Rathnasingh (1968 - 1988); Mr.G Vedamanickam (1967 - 1989); Prof. K. Paul Dawson (1962 – 1970 & (1980 – 1993); Dr. T.Ananda Veda (1967 - 2003); Dr.T.Chibi Chelliah (1980 - 2010). Prof. C. Manickam, the only member in the faculty of History was also seated in the department.

Presently, the following members of staff are working in the department: Dr.J.Jeyasingh, (H.O.D) Dr.D.Jeyasingh, Dr.R.Immanuel; Dr.R.Selvakumar, Dr. D.Solomon Raj, Dr.S.Chandrasekar, Dr.S. Henry Pandian, Mr. I. Ponnusamy (N.E.T cleared member) and Mr. V. Arockia Amuthan, (SET cleared member). Four of them have been awarded with research guideship. So far, in the economics department, four candidates have been awarded with Ph.D. degree under the able guidance of Dr. D.Solomon Raj.
