More about CRED

Centre for Rural Education and Development (CRED) is a Non Governmental Organisation that strives to empower the underprivileged and marginalized sections of the community and society in the sphere of the social, cultural, political, economic life-world by striving to create and induce a platform for Civil Societies where justice and equality could blossom through the practise of Lok Niti.

As in concord to its the objective, CRED has been working among Women, Dalits, Child Labourers, deprived and poor children, and Farmers from its inception. Women are given empowerment through various trainings and economic activities; to act as a third-force in their own place of habitat. Dalits are given awareness on issues of rights provided to them and are motivated for undertaking non-violent struggle against social inequalities, so as to address problems in a much constructive ways. CRED runs non-formal educational centres for children and discourages child labour by providing education for such children.

In order to address the issues which emerge in psycho-socio-politico-economical realms of the life world in the family system i.e., the entanglements in the relationships at different levels and in different spheres;or an individual crisis in the life of the local Vadipatty population CRED has established a counselling centre at Vadipatty.

CRED also works with small and marginal farmers with respect to the development of sustainable agriculture through organic farming and bio-diversity. It also works towards collective farming by the landless.

Even though CRED had been performing its service to the society at Vadipatty, Madurai District, the aftermath of tsunami and the identification of gaps in the works carried out by other agencies both governmental and non-governmental, prompted it to extend its service to Nagai District. Disaster management though not new to the district, CRED has been focusing on constructive works rather than mere distribution of wealth. CRED found that the discrimination shown towards women by non-government and government agencies created pain in their hearts even much greater that the destruction caused by tsunami.

Women generally carry out fish trading, a means on fish reaching the larger markets, but when the destitute widows in this areas were not given monetary benefit for empowering their entrepreneurships they could not earn their living. Many a men due to the shock of tsunami did not go for fishing. When studying the overall scenario it was found that negativity had an upper-hand among the inhabitants which was further enchased by the free help in the form of monetary benefits by many philanthropists. This malice of boredom, fatigue, laziness, etc., had to be addressed. Thus CRED chose Seruthur and Kamaeshwaram hamlets in the Nagapattinam District, as a place that needs its service among these deprived men and women. It also felt that this work fell in line with its objective of empowering the underprivileged towards finding life fulfilment. Even though the service offered in building up the society at this time is on its start by catering to the immediate issues its vision at the time of culmination is to create a social community, which is built on Lok Niti.
