Islampur is a small town in the district of Murshidabad, West Bengal. It is constituted of two census towns according to the 2011 Census of India, Islampur (314805) and Harharia Chak (314806). Islampur is named after Islam Khan, Dewaan of the then-Nawab, who tented in Goas 2 kilometers from the town in 1717. Islampur is situated in the Domkol subdivision under the block Raninagar-I. The town is under the newly-formed Raninagar assembly constituency. The Islampur Police Station, which is under the Murshidabad Police, serves the whole block. This town is well-known as Chak-Islampur. Chak is situated just beside Islampur.
The town has a heritage school named Chak Islampur S.C.M. high school, which was established as early as 1878. A college named Murshidabad Adarsha Mahabidyalay was formed in 1984. Presently Islampur has one general degree college, one coeducational high school, two girls' high schools and one Madrasa, as well as several private nursery schools and government primary schools.
The town is situated on the bank of river Bhairab. The entry to the town from Berhampur is across the Bhairab Bridge. It is situated 25 km from the district town Berhampur, on the State Highway of Berhampur-Domkal-Jalangi and Berhampur-Islampur-Seikhpara-Sagarpara. In the last decade or so the population of Islampur has increased by almost 10 times. It constitute of two census towns- Islampur and Harharia-Chak according to the 2011 census. According to the census of 2001, the total population of Islampur only was 12,689. The male population was 6,581 and the female was 6,108.
The main industry here is silk. The specialty of the silks here are muslin fabrics.
Islampur is a small town situated on the bank of river 'Bhairab'. Islampur is famous for silk industry. Some fruits and food are very famous. Among fruits litchi and mangoes taste great. A special kind of Rasogolla named 'Sponge' is also very famous. But no one can ignore the 'Alur Chop'.
