Brihadeeswara Temple

This city is termed as the "Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu". In the 10th century, this place was the capital city of the grand Chola dynasty.The city is well known for its dancing dolls, bronze making through the method of "lost wax" and Tanjore paintings.

This area is a prism of ancient as well as the modern South Indian civilizations and has been one of the chief political, cultural and religious centres of South India. There is a Tamil University which offers many research programmes in Tamil Literature for the development of the Tamil Language.

In this city, the tourism department conducts an annual cultural extravaganza in the month of December and January. Nearby the temple, there are many artisans who make the traditional musical instruments like Veena, Miruthangam etc.
