Bhoothathankett

Bhoothathankettu is a dam built on river Periyar. It is an ideal picnic spot and is located in a forest. There is a myth behind the name Bhoothathankettu is that it was built by Bhoothams (Monsters). Large blocks of huge stones are placed on the both sides of the river Periyar to form a dam, giving a look like natural dam built by superhumans. Later this original natural dam has been supplemented by a modern dam. A soft trek through the lush green forest will lead us to the old Bhoothathankettu. A small Children’s park and a pedal boating centre are available here. Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary at Thattekad is lying close to Bhoothathankettu. The Idamalayar, one of the biggest Hydro Electric projects are also located nearby.
