Bharatha Natyalaya

Smt. Roja Kannan, a prime disciple of Guru Padmashri Adyar K.Lakshman and Padma Bhushan Kalanidhi Narayanan founded the Academy of Dance and Music in 1987 to propogate and preserve the pristine purity of traditional technique in classical Bharatanatyam. In this centre for Arts Roja Kannan imparts the Kalakshetra style as handed over to her by one of the senior most exponents Sri. Adyar K.Lakshman belonging to that great institution.

Roja conducts and trains students in a multi faceted approach by infusing skills in dance, music, theory and nattuvangam (conducting) that are crucial in developing the students in to a full fledged artist.

The Centre also imparts training in folk dances, dance drama concepts involving the students. Presently "Bharatha Natyalaya" has around 75 students on its roll. Three full time teachers assist Roja Kannan in handling the different batches. 50 students have completed their debut performance successfully.

Bharatha Natyalaya under the guidance of Roja Kannan is one of the well known centres for Bharathanatyam which is featured in major Cultural Festivals not only in Chennai but all over the country. Graduated students from this centre have been successful Solo performers at various venues and award and prize winners at prestigious Festivals and Competitions.

"Bharatha Natyalaya" is happy and proud that many of its students have become versatile teachers in their own merit thereby carrying on the Bharathanatyam legacy transferred to them by their teachers over the years.

"Bharatha Natyalaya" Academy of Dance & Music of Roja Kannan completes successfully the 30th year of its inception in the field of fine arts in 2017.
