Amartya Sen in his “Tagore and His India” points out that --“Rabindra Nath rebelled against the strongly nationalist form that the independence movement often took ……..he wanted to assert India’s right to be independent without denying the importance of what India could learn—freely and profitably—from abroad. He was afraid that a rejection of the West in favor of an indigenous Indian tradition was not only limiting in itself; it could easily turn into hostility to other influences from abroad’’. So unlike Digambar Nanda, who was associated with the Extremist Movement of Bengal , Raisaheb Gangadhar Nanda from the great Nanda ancestors of Mugberia and the younger brother of Digambar Nanda, shouldered the whole responsibility of dispelling the darkness of illiteracy and ignorance and established Belda Gangadhar Academy with the mission of providing high quality education, preparing students for responsible and rewarding lives through promoting and developing self-confidence, creativity and an inquiring mind; endorsing an understanding and respect for others, team-work and leadership; and readiness to work hard for advancement of self, family and Nation in this challenging world.
