More about Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh

Assam Medical College (Assamese: অসম
চিকিৎসা মহাবিদ্যালয়) is an educational
institution in Dibrugarh, Assam, India. It
was the first medical college in north-
eastern India. It is the tertiary medical
referral centre for upper Assam and
areas in neighbouring states, including
Arunachal Pradesh.
The Berry-White School of Medicine was
established in Dibrugarh in 1900 using a
donation of 50,000 Rupees from Doctor
John Berry-White who had retired as the
civil surgeon of Lakhimpur district and
returned to London, where he died in
1896. In 1910 the college imported two x-
ray machines from England, which were
the first in India, and opened the
country's first radiology department.
After World War Two the college moved
to nearby hospital premises that had
been used by the US Army. On November
3, 1947 the college was formally
renamed to become Assam Medical
College.
