The Apollo Centre for Fetal Medicine unit was started in 2006 by Dr. Anita Kaul after her training with Prof Kypros Nicolaides, a pioneer and a leading researcher in this field.
At the time the concept of fetal medicine was largely unknown to the Indian medical fraternity and virtually absent in the minds of the lay public. There were no dedicated specialist units in Delhi or indeed in North India and most obstetricians relied on Sonologists for diagnosis of structural fetal defects. Intrauterine fetal management and therapy was not offered and discontinuation or termination of the pregnancy was the solution most commonly offered to couples confronted with a problem in the fetus or with a complicated pregnancy.
Dr PC Reddy, Chairman of the Apollo Group had the vision to recognize the importance of the specialty and sanctioned the funds to allow the construction of a dedicated Fetal Medicine unit at Indraprastha Apollo hospital, New Delhi and the purchase of a highend ultrasound machine.
