The newly set up Xavier Institute of Polytechnic and Technology (XIPT) at Namkum will launch its academic curriculum from1 October 2010, nurturing aggressive plans to offer B. Tech and M. Tech courses in the near future.

Initially, the institute on the outskirts of the state capital will offer three-year diplomas in three courses — mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and electronics and communication engineering.

Approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) on August 10, XIPT will accommodate 60 students in each course per year. As many as 110 students have been admitted to various courses in the institute after qualifying in the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examinations (JCECE).

“Beginning with three courses, we have plans to introduce diplomas in computer, civil and chemical engineering soon. However, the final goal of the institute’s governing body is to introduce B.Tech and M.Tech courses,” said K.T. Lucas, the principal of the institute.

Located 10 km from Ranchi-Tata highway at Bargawan near Namkum, the institute would be run by Jesuit group of priests of the Catholic Church who are running Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS), St Xavier’s College, St Xavier’s School (Doranda) in Ranchi and Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) in Jamshedpur.

While the chief of Ranchi Jesuit priests is designated chairman of the governing body, XISS director is secretary while XISS principal is vice-secretary. XIPT has already appointed nine faculty members. More teachers are to be appointed soon.

XIPT has three laboratories for each course and a common workshop. It also has a library on campus that is now spread over 5 acres, but will probably be expanded by another 5 acres once B. Tech and M. Tech courses are launched.

XIPT will be the third polytechnic in Ranchi after the Women’s Polytechnic at Tharpakhna and Boys’ Polytechnic at Bahu Bazar. But, once B.Tech and M.Tech courses are introduced, it would be the first institute in Jharkhand to offer diploma and degree courses in various engineering streams at one campus.

“The infrastructure will be upgraded every year as more and more courses are introduced. This process will go on till we have B.Tech and M.Tech courses,” Lucas added.
