Uttarpara Government High School

In 1845 Babu Joy Krishna had an idea of setting up an English High School in his locality. With support from his brother Babu Rajkrishna as well as the people of the area the school at Uttarpara was opened in 1846 in a few scattered hutments near Bally Khal, meant to house the workers of Bally Tension Bridge. Mr. Robert Hand was the first headmaster with assistant master Mr. C. Grant and a student strength of 167.
Eminent educationists like Ramtanu Lahiri, Banmali Mitra (classmate of Michael Madhusudan Datta), Kali Prasanna Bose were some of the past headmasters of this school. Today Uttarpara Govt School is a premier school in West Bengal, among its best. Its students, scattered across the globe, have regularly occupied top ranks in Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations.
