The Hubli Hospital For The Handicapped

The Hubli Hospital for the Handicapped is a non-governmental organization in India supported by FAIRMED (Earlier known as Swiss Emmaus Leprosy Relief) and is registered under the Societies Registration Act and the Bombay Public Trust Act. The vocational rehabilitation center is headed by an efficient leader and has able staff supervising each section and a very high level of quality in the products which is appreciated not only in the domestic market but also abroad.
With a vision of eliminating poverty related diseases like leprosy, the hospital has come a long way, working successfully towards the reduction of leprosy to a significant extent (almost eliminated) in the project areas covered in various regions of Karnataka. The hospital is now utilizing the skills acquired over decades to integrate other general health services and make them accessible to the poor and the sick with a motto of “HEALTH FOR THE POOREST”.
The goal of the hospital is to make health services (Leprosy and general health services) accessible to all, to work towards a healthy community that will be productive and, in the process, become sustainable with reduced dependence on ‘aid’.
A Rehabilitation Training Unit was started to help people with disability (initially only for those with a disability due to leprosy) earn a livelihood by providing them with an opportunity to earn a sustainable livelihood through various activities of the RTU and also by introducing vocational training in Carpentry to help them earn a living and support their families.
The main aim of the Rehabilitation Training Unit, attached to HHH, is the social rehabilitation of handicapped persons, may they be affected by leprosy or any other disability. Five different work sections were created as Training and production workshops, with the aim to primarily integrate the trained disabled persons in a net-work of cottage industries and secondly to provide sheltered working places in Hubli.
