INTRODUCTION

Most of the developed or developing cities in our country are highly polluted. The share of buses is negligible in most Indian cities as compared to personalized vehicles, three wheeler, two-wheelers and cars account for more than 80 percent of the vehicle population in most large cities .The main reasons are the air and noise pollution caused by transport vehicles, especially petrol-powered two and three wheelers. For example, as of 2002, India, with an estimated 37 million motorcycles/mopeds, was home to the largest number of motorized two wheelers in the world and there is more than 5 million auto rickshaw, over 20 million people dependent on auto rickshaw’s earning. In India petrol and diesel powered three wheelers and their population is growing at a healthy rate of about 15% per annum. Besides being a major hazard to people’s health, these machines are guzzling huge amounts of petrol and diesel for which the country has to pay dearly in foreign exchange outflow. In fact it is a common sight in developing countries that during traffic jams in congested areas of cities these vehicles produce tremendous pollution. VOLT can provide a non-polluting and a very silent transport system for urban and rural areas of Bihar. Besides it is a very energy efficient and cost effective vehicle. Work done at our organization has shown that improved cycle rickshaws powered by electric motor and batteries have a potential to provide an attractive alternative to petrol and diesel powered three wheelers. Besides they can also provide large scale employment and extra income to the rickshaw pullers/ auto rickshaw drivers. Traffic in Indian big cities generally moves slowly, where traffic jams and accidents are very common. India has very poor records on road safely around 90,000 people die from road accidents every year. At least 13 people die every hour in road accidents in the country.
We can reduce both jam and accident by opting VOLT which is smaller in size and speed of 25 KMPH.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Working in the space of energy efficiency, the first thing that we tried to look at is: energy efficiency of an electric vehicle as compared to a auto rickshaw that runs on gasoline. As per research done by General Motors, electric vehicle convert about 60% of electrical energy they get from the grid to power at the wheels (source: Fueleconomy.gov). In comparison gasoline (or petrol) vehicles convert only about 20% of energy.
In India we have about 10-15% transmission and distribution losses, which makes electric cars better in terms of energy consumption as compared to petrol vehicles. Even in states with worst transmission and distribution, the losses are about 40%, which still makes use of electric cars more energy efficient.
From an Individual's perspective lets have a look at the VOLT, it’s per KM unit consumption of electricity is 0.111 units. Apply the per unit cost of electricity applicable to you, if we assume average cost of electricity at Rs 5 per unit, the cost of running VOLT per kilometer is just Rs 0.555 per kilometer. Compare it to a car that has a mileage of 15 km/ltr, at a cost of Rs 81 per liter of petrol, the cost per kilometer is about Rs 5.
In India, most of the fuel is imported (both coal and petroleum), thus moving to electric vehicle and improving efficiencies certainly provides a lot of advantage in terms of energy efficiency. In fact import of petroleum is of the order of 70% while that of coal is 20%.

BENEFITS OF VOLT

VOLT offers immense benefits to not only the environment and society but also to rickshaw drivers, auto drivers, institutions and passengers. The essential benefits are-

• VOLT provides very quiet and smooth operation. There is absolutely no noise like those in auto rickshaw that run on gasoline (or petrol/diesel). This is because VOLT has very less moving parts.

• While gasoline (or petrol/diesel) auto rickshaw consumes petrol even when auto rickshaw is standing and the engine is on, VOLT does not consume any electricity during those moments. Thus saving a lot of energy during heavy traffic and making it a great option for people mostly having city drive.

• While gasoline (or petrol/diesel) auto rickshaw loose energy while braking, VOLT has a regenerative braking system that provides it ability to recover energy lost during braking. In a heavy traffic drive, this again can be quite beneficial.

• Because they have less number of moving parts, the maintenance cost of VOLT is much less as compared to auto rickshaws with internal combustion engine.

• VOLT offers great value for money due to low running cost. As price fluctuation in dollar and high crude oil price have huge impact on running cost of gasoline (petrol/diesel) auto rickshaws results as fare raise, however VOLT is completely electric (DC current) driven vehicle and is cheapest and environment friendly competitor in the list. This is a big step towards controlled fare for in city travelling passengers (middle class and students).

• VOLT is powered by new technology DC Brushless motor and provides higher efficiency, saves 30% to 50% of power, fast response, and adjustable speed with zero maintenance.

Brushless Direct Current Motor (BLDC) Advantage:

Brushless DC motors have several advantages over competing motor technologies.
The following table summarizes these advantages and the underlying reasons for
these advantages.

Smaller motor: Modern permanent magnets and no losses in the rotor enable BLDC motor to be smaller compared to both brush DC motors and induction AC motors.

More efficient motor: Permanent magnet in the rotor. Unlike AC induction motors, there are no core losses in the rotor.

Higher speeds: No brushes to limit speed, lower speed losses by design. BLDC motors have been designed for speeds as high as 100,000 RPM. The problems of retention of magnets, in a rotor spinning at high speeds, have long been solved.

No maintenance : No brushes to replace inspect or maintain.

Faster response: Lower rotor inertia compared to a brushless motor or an induction motor.

Lower RFI (radio frequency interference): No brushes so radio frequency interference is minimized near to zero.

Linear speed-torque characteristics: Internal shaft position feedback. Permanent magnet design with internal shaft position feedback gives BLDC motors linear speed-torque characteristics when compared to “open loop” AC induction motors.

High starting torque: Internal shaft position feedback gives BLDC motors higher starting and low speed torque when compared to “open loop” AC induction motors.

Adjustable speed: The commutation electronics can be used for speed control without added cost.

Better heat removal: The heat generating element is the stator which is on the outside of the motor as opposed to being in the inside as in the case of a brush DC motor.

Much better controllability versus induction motors: Linear speed torque characteristics due to internal shaft position feedback and permanent magnet design.
