Sankurathri Foundation was established in 1989 to provide necessary tools for the underprivileged persons in order to improve the quality of their life. The Foundation was registered as a Trust under the rules and obtained the Income Tax Exemption under US 80G of Income Tax Act, 1961. Three volunteer Trustees manage the Foundation and all the activities are planned and supervised by the Executive Trustee, who stays at Kakinada.

Sankurathri Foundation was established by Dr.Chandrasekhar Sankurathri as a memorial to his wife, Manjari Sankurathri, son, Srikiran and daughter, Sarada who were killed in a terrorist bombing of Air India Flight 182 (Kanishka) on 23rd June 1985. The Foundation's main mission is to empower the poor through better education, eye care and timely help to the needy.

Srikiran Institute of Ophthalmology, a division of Sankurathri Foundation, has been working to eliminate avoidable blindness for 20 years, has received the best Non Governmental organization award for two successive years in 2002 and 2003 for performing maximum number of free cataract surgeries to the rural poor and downtrodden.
Srikiran Institute of Ophthalmology was accredited by National Board of Examinations to run DNB (Diplomate of National Board) course in Ophthalmology (Post Graduation in Ophthalmology). The Government of India recognized Srikiran as one of the training centres for Ophthalmologists. Srikiran is also a training centre for the ophthalmology residents from USA and Canada.
Srikiran Institute of Ophthalmology has provided quality eye care services to more than 20 lakh patients and restored eye sight to over 2, 00,000. Among them 90% of them are free of cost to the rural poor and this is the only eye hospital in India to perform that many free surgeries.

Today, Srikiran is a very well equipped quality eye care provider in the region. The new hospital building has ample waiting areas for Out- Patients; four fully equipped air conditioned Operation Theatres, specialty clinics for Cornea, Glaucoma, Vitreo-Retinal problems, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Squint, Oculoplasty, Low Vision Rehabilitation Center, Microbiology Laboratory, Library and Auditorium. Apart from base hospital, we are having a City Center in Bhanugudi Junction and 4 Vision Centers in Jagannaikpur, Mandapeta, Peddapuram, Tuni, Mummidivaram, Narsipatnam and Drasharamam.

During the last 20years over 20,00,000 of outpatients were examined and performed over 2,00,000 surgeries. This is the only eye hospital with this remarkable distinction.
