Ruhiyyih School

Ruhiyyih School is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (ISCE) of New-Delhi, India, and offers Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) examination for class X (Ten), and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) for class XII (Twelve). Ruhiyyih School provides academic, moral, and spiritual education for children and youths from Nursery to Twelfth Grade.

The core values of Ruhiyyih School are based upon the principles and teachings of the Bahá'í Faith; we believe that each student is “a mine rich in gems of inestimable value” and that “education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.”

Our devoted and loving teachers and staff strive to provide an active and encouraging atmosphere of learning for students to achieve high levels of life-long learning.


The name:
Ruhiyyih School is named after her holiness the Hand of the Cause of God Mary Sutherland Maxwell (1910 – 2000), who later received the title of Amatu'l-Bahá Ruhiyyih Khánum. She was the wife of Shoghi Effendi, who was the Guardian (head) of the Bahá’í Faith from 1921 to 1957.


Giving back to the community:
In addition to their academic classes, Ruhiyyih School students are actively participating in a series of seven special courses designed by the Ruhi Institute to learn about the human values, spiritual aspects of life, and service to humanity.

Students who have completed courses 1, 2, and 3 are eligible to hold moral education classes for children and teach them about human virtues such as honesty, love, truthfulness, unity, and the like. Currently, there are 15 children’s classes, which are free of charge, offered by Ruhiyyih School students to more than 100 children of the Ruhiyyih School’s surrounding towns and villages.

Students who have finished courses 1 through 5 are eligible to become junior youth animators, who hold junior youth groups (JYG) for ages 12 through 15. The JYG helps the youth to develop language skills, power of expression, and it addresses mathematical concepts and social issues. Currently, there are 9 JYGs, which are free of charge, offered by Ruhiyyih School students to more than 50 junior youths of the Ruhiyyih School’s nearby towns and villages.

Surrounded by beautiful greeneries, tea gardens, and wildlife sanctuary, Ruhiyyih School is located about 9 kilometers south of the city of Darjeeling, and 9 kilometers north of the town of Sonada on the magnificent Himalayan Mountain at the height of 2,134 meters above the sea level. Ruhiyyih School’s nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport, and its nearest train station is New Jalpaiguri Train Station.
